ECONOMICS OF VARIABLE RATE PLANTING FOR CORN AgEcon
Lowenberg-DeBoer, James.
This analysis works out the economic implications for variable rate seeding of the corn population response curves estimated by Pioneer Hi-Bred agronomists. Examples are developed for various mixes of low, medium and high yield potential soil, as well as for a range of seed costs and variable rate equipment costs. The strategies analyzed were: variable rate planting using agronomic recommendations for each yield potential zone, variable rate planting using an economic decision rule for each yield potential zone, an information strategy which sets the uniform planting rate at the highest population indicated by agronomic recommendations for any part of the field and a second information strategy which uses an economic decision rule for the whole field based...

EVALUATING THE RETURNS TO VARIABLE RATE NITROGEN APPLICATION AgEcon
Roberts, Roland K.; English, Burton C.; Mahajanashetti, S.B..
Potential benefits of variable rate nitrogen application are illustrated and information needs identified. Lower costs of precision farming services, higher crop prices, and greater divergence in yield response potentials across management zones reduce the spatial variability required for profitable variable rate application. Information needs include identification and measurement of management zones within a field and estimation of management zone yield response functions, crop and input prices, and the cost of precision farming services.

Adoption of Maize Production Technologies in the Coastal Lowlands of Kenya AgEcon
Wekesa, E.; Mwangi, Wilfred; Verkuijl, Hugo; Danda, Milton Kengo; De Groote, Hugo.
Maize is the major food crop grown in the coastal region of Kenya and constitutes a major component of the diet of the population in the region. However, average yields are far below the potential for the region and low production levels create serious food deficits. Over the years, new technologies have been introduced but adoption has remained low, especially for fertilizer. This paper examined current maize-farming practices and technological and socioeconomic factors that influenced adoption in the Kilifi and Kwale Districts of the Coast Province, that together account for half of maize production in the region. The study found low adoption levels for improved maize varieties and technology, especially fertilizer, among farmers in the area. Farmers...

MAJOR IDEAS IN THE HISTORY OF AGRICULTURAL FINANCE AND FARM MANAGEMENT AgEcon
Barry, Peter J.; Stanton, Bernard F..
This paper contains two articles that discuss major ideas from the history of agricultural finance and farm management. The agricultural finance article focuses on ideas that emerged prior to 1960. These ideas are classified into those emerging from action and scientific-framing eras. The second article characterizes the evolution of farm management and production economics from its beginnings in about 1900 to the start of the 21st century. Emphasis is placed on the melding of ideas from agriculturalists and economists.

OUTPUT SUPPLY AND INPUT DEMAND SYSTEM OF COMMERCIAL AND BACKYARD POULTRY PRODUCERS IN INDONESIA AgEcon
Fabiosa, Jacinto F.; Jensen, Helen H.; Yan, Dong.
Indonesia's domestic broiler production has grown rapidly, in part because of a ban on imports of poultry parts and strict inspection and meat certification requirements. Whether Indonesia will continue to protect the domestic broiler sector and import feed grains and other inputs or whether it will directly import meat products is a relevant question to many stakeholders. This study uses a normalized quadratic function to estimate the output supply of commercial and backyard broiler producers in Indonesia and the input demand for three major inputs: day-old chicks, feed, and labor. Data come from three datasets: a 1996 household survey and 1996 and 2000 surveys of commercial producers. For the most recent dataset, the own-price elasticity in both the...

Input Quality in the Sugar Beet Industry AgEcon
Boland, Michael A.; Marsh, Thomas L..
Using 23 years of data (1978-2000), this study examines seven vertically integrated sugar beet plants representing three different companies in the United States. The objective of this research is to identify the marginal costs of producing sugar beets for vertically integrated sugar beet processors as a way of determining the cost savings from higher quality sugar beets. In doing so, we account for quality differences in the sugar beet input that are used to manufacture the refined sugar output. The results quantify links between high quality sugar beets and lower processing costs.

Location Preference for Risk-Averse Dutch Dairy Farmers Immigrating to the United States AgEcon
Richardson, James W.; Herbst, Brian K.; Duncan, Anthony; den Besten, Mark; van Hoven, Peter.
Increased environmental regulations and a milk quota that restricts growth have increased the interest in immigration to the United States by Dutch dairy farmers. A risk-based economic analysis of 23 representative U.S. dairy farms versus a representative Dutch farm shows that risk-averse Dutch dairy farmers would prefer to liquidate their dairy farms and invest in a large dairy in Idaho or north Texas. The risk ranking suggested that continuing to farm in the Netherlands rather than immigrating to the United States is preferred over only two of the 23 U.S. representative farms analyzed.

The economics of land fragmentation in the north of Vietnam AgEcon
Van Hung, Pham; MacAulay, T. Gordon; Marsh, Sally P..
Land fragmentation, where a single farm has a number of parcels of land, is a common feature of agriculture in many countries, especially in developing countries. In Vietnam, land fragmentation is common, especially in the north. For the whole country, there are about 75 million parcels of land, an average of seven to eight plots per farm household. Such fragmentation can be seen to have negative and positive benefits for farm households and the community generally. Comparative statics analysis and analysis of survey data have led to the conclusion that small-sized farms are likely to be more fragmented, and that fragmentation had a negative impact on crop productivity and increased family labour use and other money expenses. Policies which allow the...

Aligning Incentives for Accelerated Heifer Growth in Custom Heifer Growing Contracts AgEcon
Olynk, Nicole J.; Wolf, Christopher A..
Dairy managers today are faced with the decision to either raise their own replacements on the dairy farm or send heifers to a custom heifer grower. The largest potential challenge of contracting out the heifer raising enterprise revolves around the potential for a moral hazard problem because of hidden action on the part of the custom heifer grower. A principal-agent framework was used to elicit contract terms which provide incentives for the custom heifer grower to perform accelerated growth without heifers becoming over-conditioned. In order to provide incentives to custom growers, heifers returned to the dairy farm should be compared in performance to other heifers of similar age. We solve for the price paid per pound of gain, price paid for inch...

Labor requirements and profitability of alternative soil fertility replenishment technologies in Zambia AgEcon
Ajayi, Olu Clifford; Akinnifesi, Festus K..
Low soil fertility is a major concern in agricultural productivity and development policy discourse in sub-saharan Africa. The problem is exacerbated by government withdrawal from fertilizer input markets and the inability of private sector operators to fill the gap. This warranted a search for other nutrient sources to supplement chemical fertilizers. Based on field data collected in Zambia, this study assessed the labor inputs implications of “improved tree fallows”, continuous maize cropping with and without mineral fertilizer and, evaluated the financial profitability of the different land use systems. Results show that agroforestry-based land use systems are more profitable (NPV between $233 and $309 per ha) than farmers’ practice of continuous maize...

The Effects of Sex-Sorted Semen on Southern Dairy Farms AgEcon
Herbst, Brian K.; Anderson, David P.; Outlaw, Joe L.; Richardson, James W.; Bilby, Todd.
This paper examines the impact of sex-sorted semen adoption on dairy farm level economics. Representative dairies are used to simulate the financial impacts of moving to this new technology. Key economic, financial and herd dynamics will be compared among dairies to show how the uses of sex-sorted semen will affect dairy farms. All seven of the representative dairies that were analyzed sold surplus replacement heifers using sex-sorted semen. The increase use of sex-sorted semen can have very positive impacts on dairies throughout the Southern United States.

Estimating A Farm Group Model and Input Allocations Using Accountancy Data AgEcon
Gocht, Alexander; Heckelei, Thomas.
This paper proposes and applies an innovative estimation approach for farm group programming models using Generalised Maximum Entropy. The proposed set-up simultaneously determines calibrating cost function parameters and input allocations to production activities. The methodology is applied to Belgium FADN data of arable farms for which available input allocations allow to validate the estimation approach. Results outperform separate estimates of input allocations previously applied in the literature and this finding is robust with respect to support point design.
